Veritasium, Linux, SSH, XZ and... an awesome Rick Roll used as a
demonstration of compression.

Pretty good video and explains a lot of complicated things pretty well in
simpler terms.

And how the internet was almost p@wned.

=============================================================== From: Phil Sieg via chugalug ------------------------------------------------------ Apple=E2=80=99s mail client does not show it as from Mike Harrison, it = only shows it being from CHUGALUG. I have been dealing with this for years. If I care enough or it is = interesting I go look at it on webmail=E2=80=A6 I suspect the only people affected by this are old farts like me that = refuse to use webmail if we can use a client=E2=80=A6. =============================================================== From: Michael Harrison via chugalug ------------------------------------------------------ It was from me: Name added to the "From String" but the email address is from Chugalug. It's a work around for all the things that validate email addresses, without exposing email addresses even more than they are. =============================================================== From: r d flowers via chugalug ------------------------------------------------------ I'm using Proton via webmail, and can see only Chugalug, not Mike. RD/Rick Flowers Likes FB, wikitree, mastodon, and tvrail.com Sent with [Proton Mail](https://proton.me/mail/home) secure email.

=============================================================== From: Michael Harrison via chugalug ------------------------------------------------------ Wes: no idea why the name portion of the FROM string is not being displayed... possibly a different header is used for that? Mike: makes the SPF and DKIM harder and.. and.... Willing to make changes if ya'll want to try it. It'd be some tweaking with OpenDKIM.. and.... and... hadn't gone down that rabbit hole in a while. Some people tweak it by having multiple From: lines but that's not exactly kosher and gets mail flagged.

=============================================================== From: wes via chugalug ------------------------------------------------------ spf is only affected by the sending ip address. headers aren't a factor there. dkim is only technically affected as it will generate a different signature due to the different content of the email. however the signature will be equally accepted as it's validated at the domain level. additionally, both of these checks are done against the _envelope_ from address, which need not match the from header in the email text. the email text from header is the one used by end-user mail display clients= . correcting myself on the subject of from vs reply-to: most listserv software places the original sender's email address in the email body from header, and the list address in the reply-to header. they use the list's address in the envelope "mail from" command, and the recipient in the "rcpt to". there does seem to be something odd happening with the current setup of the email body from header: ----- From: Michael Harrison via chugalug ----- From: r d flowers via chugalug ----- From: Lynn Dixon via chugalug ----- note the line break, and absence of any direct sender address. the "via" address doesn't count. I guess certain muas are choking on this? and others are helpfully filling in the blanks? working example from a different listserv (real example used with permission): ----- From: Vince Winter ----- here are all of the send/receive related headers from that email, just to show that it can work (again, shared with permission): ----- From: Vince Winter Date: Fri, 3 Oct 2025 18:15:48 -0700 To: "Portland Linux/Unix Group" Subject: Re: [PLUG] android phones and scrcpy Reply-To: "Portland Linux/Unix Group" Errors-To: plug-bounces@lists.pdxlinux.org Sender: PLUG ----- emails to this list pass spf and dkim. occasionally one gets flagged as spam but that is fairly rare and probably due to body content. I'm not saying that MELEE should be mailman but I do think there are things that are worth trying.. -wes

=============================================================== From: Zachariah Gibbens via chugalug ------------------------------------------------------ Oddly enough, I'm also using Proton, via the mobile app and see Mike via Chugalug fine. In the recent past I've used Thunderbird via Proton Bridge and via Webmail and don't recall an issue. I'll check for this specific thread later today. -------- Original Message --------
